Nintendo removes 401 Switch emulator repositories from GitHub
On August 21 Nintendo sent seven DMCA takedown notices to GitHub, resulting in the removal of 401 repositories hosting Nintendo Switch emulators. The notices targeted Suyu (311 repositories), the Android emulator Skyline and several Yuzu forks. Nintendo says the emulators illegally circumvent its Technological Protection Measures by using proprietary cryptographic keys (prod.keys) to decrypt game ROMs. The takedowns reduce availability of Switch emulation projects on GitHub and raise the stakes alongside a separate lawsuit against Yuzu.
- 401 GitHub repositories were removed; 311 of those were Suyu repositories.
- Targets included Suyu (Yuzu’s successor), Skyline (Android emulator) and multiple Yuzu forks.
- Nintendo’s DMCA notices state the emulators circumvent TPMs and use proprietary prod.keys to decrypt Switch games.
- Combined with earlier actions (over 8,500 removals in May 2024), the GitHub takedowns bring Nintendo’s total to nearly 9,000 repositories and coincide with a lawsuit against Yuzu.
