Fan-made 'recompilations' are modernizing classics while Nintendo prepares Ocarina of Time remake

Nintendo will release a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2 in a few months. Meanwhile a growing community of fan developers is reverse-engineering older games to create modern PC/Android recompilations with features like randomizers, accessibility options and widescreen/high-framerate support. New toolkits such as N64 Recompiled, ReXGlue and RecompOne have lowered the technical barrier for these projects, but the unpaid effort faces pushback from an influx of low-effort, AI-assisted work. This matters because fan recompilations preserve legacy titles and often add features beyond official remasters.
