Del Toro asked for no‑respawn Dead Cells; developer points to existing Assist Mode
Filmmaker and gamer Guillermo del Toro asked Motion Twin for a version of Dead Cells that removes respawning to allow easier exploration and progress. Motion Twin responded that the game already offers an Assist Mode which lets players resurrect at the start of the current biome or at the nearest checkpoint rather than restarting a run. Assist Mode was introduced in June 2022 as part of the version 2.9 Accessibility/Breaking Barriers update, giving older or less hardcore players an easier way to play the 2018 roguelike-metroidvania.
- Guillermo del Toro publicly requested a no-respawn option on July 29 to avoid restarting runs and to better explore the game world.
- Motion Twin, the French developer of Dead Cells, replied on July 30 and highlighted the existing Assist Mode as a solution.
- Assist Mode was added in June 2022 in patch 2.9 (Accessibility/Breaking Barriers) and allows resurrection at the start of the current biome or nearest checkpoint instead of a full run restart.
- Dead Cells is a 2018 roguelike-metroidvania; Assist Mode changes help older or less hardcore players make tangible progress without repeated restarts.
