Modder Turns SSDs Into Physical Steam Game 'Cartridges'
A Reddit user built plug-and-play physical 'Steam cartridges' by loading games and a custom script onto used SATA SSDs and adding custom cases. They published the code and say it may work with SD cards, USB drives and other storage, but tested only on an older Windows 10 setup. Using SSDs raises costs, and the industry continues to shift toward digital-only distribution.
- Built with used SATA SSDs, custom script and labeled cases
- Examples include Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 5, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2
- Code posted online; SD/USB possible but only tested on Windows 10
- SSD cost is higher; console market trending digital (Sony 2028, Project Helix rumors)
