ESA Lobbyist Says Some Minecraft, Call of Duty Community Servers Are Illegal
California's Protect Our Games Act was voted down in the State Senate. ESA VP Jennifer Gibbons told lawmakers community-run Minecraft and Call of Duty servers are "illegal," calling them piracy and citing two pending lawsuits and a USTR report. Reporters and critics say she conflated servers targeted for subscription circumvention with ordinary community servers, some of which are linked from Minecraft's official site. Advocates behind Stop Killing Games say they will pursue similar bills in other states.
