Water-cooled Steam Machine mod uses neon-pink tubing, cuts APU temps 20–30°C
A modder converted a retail Steam Machine into a water-cooled system and posted a short build video showing the work. The conversion adds a fan-cooled radiator mounted to the rear, a custom CNC water block and external neon-pink coolant lines, and reduced APU temperatures by about 20–30°C. The mod swaps the Steam Machine’s original compact, quiet air-cooling design for a bulkier setup that raises performance cooling but introduces VRM/MOSFET cooling challenges.
- Builder Stefan Warecka posted a Reddit video documenting the conversion, which began by cutting into the Steam Machine’s enclosure with an angle grinder.
- Cooling modifications include a rear-mounted radiator, a custom CNC water block, and external tubing filled with neon-pink coolant.
- Measured APU temperatures fell roughly 20–30°C after the water-cooling overhaul, and Cyberpunk 2077 was shown running during the demo.
- Next planned work targets VRM cooling because the MOSFETs are very small and operating near thermal limits; a full build video is due on the creator’s YouTube channel.
