Unturned source code released on GitHub for non-commercial modding
Smartly Dressed Games has published Unturned's source code and project files on GitHub under a non-commercial license to enable community mods and total conversions. The release requires mods and all their features to remain free to players and omits code the studio lacks redistribution rights for, including anti-cheat and third-party pathfinding. The code release is not OSI-certified open source, and the studio plans to pursue MIT re-licensing of parts of the project once it finishes another game and re-acquires rights. This gives the community tools to extend and preserve Unturned while commercial restrictions and missing components limit some reuse.
- Source code and project files for Unturned are available on GitHub under a strictly non-commercial license.
- Mods made with the source must be free and grant players access to all features and content at no cost.
- Certain code was removed from the public release because the studio lacks redistribution rights—examples include anti-cheat systems and third-party pathfinding modules.
- The release is not considered open source by the Open Source Initiative; Smartly Dressed Games aims to re-license the U3 SDK under the MIT License after finishing another game and re-acquiring necessary rights.
