MTG's Hobbit set adds new mechanics and repeats Sting and One Ring cards
The upcoming Magic: The Gathering Hobbit set introduces three new mechanics and several character/item reprints tied to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The set adds a new Sting card and a Gollum-focused One Ring card, bringing each item to three distinct cards across recent Middle-earth releases. New mechanics—hone, storied, and recruit—change how equipment, artifact/legendary/Saga counts, and Laketown humans function during play.
- The set adds Sting, Bilbo's Sword, which uses the new hone mechanic that grants +1/+0 to a creature with equipment.
- My Precious represents the One Ring as Gollum's, joining previous cards for Bilbo's Ring and The One Ring and complementing an existing instant, Slip on the Ring.
- Dwarves gain the storied condition, which activates when a player controls three or more artifacts, legendaries, and/or Sagas; Dáin, Lord of the Iron Hills makes opponents pay one mana per attacking creature when storied.
- Laketown humans gain recruit, which draws a card and requires a discard and creates a 1/1 Human Soldier if the discard was a nonland; several hobbit-themed cards continue to be powered by accumulated food tokens.
