Riftbound dropped Magic-style deck resources after players rejected them
Riot Games' League of Legends TCG Riftbound originally used a deck-based resource system inspired by Magic: The Gathering but players rejected that mechanic in playtests. Game director Dave Guskin, a former Magic designer, recruited two designers who tested 10–12 alternative resource systems before settling on a new approach. Riftbound launched in English late last year, gained a large fanbase and a strong presence at Gen Con, showing player feedback directly shaped its core mechanics.
- Riftbound released in English late last year and built a large fanbase with notable presence at Gen Con in Indianapolis.
- Game director Dave Guskin previously worked as a designer on Magic: The Gathering and initially proposed putting resources in the deck, mirroring Magic’s mana concept.
- Playtesters rejected the deck-based resource system, prompting Guskin to bring in two designers (Dave and Jon) who trialed 10–12 different resource systems.
- The development team for Riftbound is smaller than expected, and the team’s iterative redesign demonstrates player testing changing a core gameplay mechanic.
